For 50 years, Jacques-Simon SAJOU devoted his time and inventiveness to fancy needle work. During the 1830s he started la Maison Sajou and was honored many times over the years. Frederique Crestin-Billet fell under the charm of Sajou over twenty years ago when she became interested in embroidery and haberdashery objects. Her hobby was put on hold for a while she raised her children, worked in the publishing business and supporter her husband's business initiatives. All along, the vintage haberdashery objects continued to be a source of inspiration for her numerous embroidery projects.

She managed to combine work and pleasure by publishing books on cross stitch, satin stitch, and on thimbles and scissors. Along the way she continued to add to her ever-increasing collection of SAJOU albums. Having read very little about this company, she decided to investigate further and quickly discovered that the wonderful name of SAJOU had not been used since 1954. In France, once a business is retired, the company name is protected from use for fifty years. Her discovery meant that she would be able to reintroduce SAJOU as the trade name for wonderful needle arts products in the SAJOU tradition of quality and artistry.

From then on everything moved very quickly and the first SAJOU products received a very warm welcome. Maison Sajou presents vintage albums as they were, without edits. The company adds to the existing collection with new patterns in the style of the originals. Vintage designs for scissors, wooden boxes and notions of many styles have become part of the continuing assortment of offerings from the company. Everything evolves from a world that reminds us of the haberdashers of yesteryear – a world of quality and ingenuity. It is an approach born of a passion for needlework and an intense admiration for the works of the 19th century.

The Sajou catalog is often referred to as the "drool book" because of the detailed photographs of the extensive collection. We keep many of the popular items in stock in our warehouse and can special order anything you see on the Sajou site. BagSmith and Smith International are proud to be the North American distributors of Maison Sajou!
